Molex vs JST vs DuPont: A Professional Engineer's Guide to Connector Selection

The Connector Selection Problem

Every electronics engineer has faced the connector selection decision. You have a wire-to-board or wire-to-wire connection to make. You know the current, the voltage, the wire gauge, the available PCB footprint, and the operating environment. But which connector family do you choose?

Molex, JST, and DuPont (generic 2.54mm pitch) connectors collectively cover the vast majority of wire-to-board and wire-to-wire connections in modern electronics. They are not interchangeable — each has distinct mechanical and electrical characteristics, application strengths, and failure modes. Choosing the wrong connector family for an application is a design error that will surface in production or in the field.

This guide provides a systematic framework for connector selection across these three families, based on the engineering parameters that matter: pitch, current rating, mating cycle durability, environmental resistance, and application fit.

Understanding the Three Connector Families

JST Connectors — Precision Miniature Interconnect

JST (Japan Solderless Terminal) is a Japanese connector manufacturer whose product families have become global standards in compact electronics. Key JST series by pitch:

SH 1.0mm: Wearables, compact IoT, miniature drones. Max 1A/contact, 28–32AWG.
GH 1.25mm: FPV drones, flight controllers, robotics. Max 1A/contact, 26–30AWG.
ZH 1.5mm: Consumer electronics, cameras, portable devices. Max 1A/contact, 26–30AWG.
PH 2.0mm: LiPo batteries, RC vehicles, general electronics. Max 2A/contact, 22–28AWG.
XH 2.54mm: Development boards, production PCBs, general wiring. Max 3A/contact, 22–28AWG.

JST strengths: Positive locking, compact footprint, wide pitch range, high manufacturing precision.
JST limitations: Smaller series require precision assembly tooling; limited current capacity in smaller series.

Molex Connectors — Industrial-Grade Reliability

Molex connector systems dominate industrial, automotive, and high-power electronics applications. Key series:

KK 254 (2.54mm): Industry-standard 0.1" pitch wire-to-board. Max 3A/contact.
KK2510 (2.5mm): Robust wire-to-board for power distribution. DIP header, through-hole PCB.
MX3.0mm: Mid-pitch for moderate current. Max 5A/contact, 20–26AWG.
Mini-Fit Jr. (4.2mm): High-current dual-row. Max 9A/contact, 18–22AWG. ATX power standard.

Molex strengths: High current ratings, robust housing, high mating cycle durability, industrial certifications.
Molex limitations: Larger footprint than JST; higher cost than generic alternatives.

DuPont 2.54mm — The Universal Prototyping Standard

"DuPont" connectors are a de facto industry standard based on the 0.1" (2.54mm) pitch. They are the standard for Arduino, Raspberry Pi, breadboard jumper wires, and general prototyping.

DuPont strengths: Universal compatibility with 0.1" pin headers, extremely low cost, widely available, breadboard compatible.
DuPont limitations: No positive locking mechanism (friction fit only), lower mating cycle durability, not suitable for vibration environments.

Head-to-Head Comparison: Key Engineering Parameters

Current Rating by Series

JST SH/GH/ZH: ≤1A per contact
JST PH: ≤2A per contact
JST XH / DuPont 2.54mm / Molex KK 254: ≤3A per contact
Molex MX3.0mm: ≤5A per contact
Molex Mini-Fit Jr.: ≤9A per contact

Locking Mechanism

DuPont 2.54mm: Friction fit only. Not suitable for vibration environments.
JST: Positive latch locking. Suitable for moderate vibration.
Molex: Positive latch with higher engagement force. Suitable for industrial vibration.

Mating Cycle Durability

DuPont generic: 30–50 cycles. JST PH/XH: 30 cycles (JST spec). Molex KK/Mini-Fit Jr.: 30 cycles. For high-cycle applications (>30), specialized connectors are required.

Application Decision Framework

Compact IoT / wearable / miniature drone (≤1A, space-critical): JST SH 1.0mm or JST GH 1.25mm
Consumer electronics / portable device (≤1–2A): JST ZH 1.5mm or JST PH 2.0mm
Development / prototyping / Arduino: DuPont 2.54mm or JST XH 2.54mm (JST XH preferred for production)
Production PCB / general electronics (≤3A): JST XH 2.54mm or Molex KK 254
Industrial / power distribution (3–5A): Molex MX3.0mm or Molex KK2510
High-current power (≥5A): Molex Mini-Fit Jr. 4.2mm
Vibration environment: JST (moderate) or Molex (high) — never DuPont

Summary

Connector selection between Molex, JST, and DuPont families should be driven by pitch/footprint constraints, current rating requirements, mating cycle durability needs, and locking mechanism requirements. DuPont 2.54mm is appropriate for prototyping. JST covers compact to standard pitch with positive locking. Molex provides industrial-grade durability and high current capacity.
