TPIC6B595 — Power Logic 8-Bit Shift Register, DIP-20

The TPIC6B595 is a power logic 8-bit serial-in / parallel-out shift register with integrated N-channel DMOS transistor outputs, capable of sinking up to 150mA at 50V per channel. It is the low-side counterpart to the MIC5891 (high-side) — where the MIC5891 sources current to common-cathode loads, the TPIC6B595 sinks current from common-anode loads. With built-in clamp diodes on all outputs and a standard SPI-compatible 3-wire interface, it is the definitive solution for driving common-anode 7-segment LED displays, relay coils (low-side), and other high-current loads directly from a microcontroller.

Key Features

  • 8-bit serial-in / parallel-out — SPI-compatible 3-wire interface (SER IN, SRCK, RCK)
  • Low-side DMOS outputs — sinks up to 150mA @ 50V per channel
  • Built-in clamp diodes on all outputs — inductive load protection
  • Logic supply: 4.5–5.5V — 5V logic compatible
  • Load supply: up to 50V
  • Daisy-chainable — cascade multiple TPIC6B595s for more outputs
  • Output Enable (G̅) pin — blanking and PWM brightness control
  • DIP-20 package — breadboard and through-hole PCB compatible

TPIC6B595 vs 74HC595 vs MIC5891

  • 74HC595: Logic-level outputs only (~35mA) — needs external transistors for power loads
  • TPIC6B595 (this): 150mA low-side DMOS — drives common-anode displays and low-side relay coils directly
  • MIC5891: 500mA high-side Darlington — drives common-cathode displays and high-side loads

Typical Applications

  • Common-anode 7-segment LED display driver (high-voltage, high-current digits)
  • Low-side relay coil driver array
  • Solenoid valve driver (low-side switching)
  • High-power LED matrix driver (common-anode)
  • Industrial output expansion for PLCs and embedded controllers
  • Stepper motor phase driver
