W25N01GV — 1Gbit (128MB) Serial NAND Flash Memory IC
The W25N01GV from Winbond is a 1Gbit (128MB) Serial NAND Flash memory IC — the most popular large-capacity flash choice for Teensy 4.1 external memory expansion, data logging, audio sample storage, and embedded file systems. Unlike NOR flash, NAND flash offers significantly higher density at lower cost per bit, making the W25N01GV the preferred choice when you need 128MB of non-volatile storage in a compact SOP-8 or WSON-8 package. It is fully supported by the LittleFS library on Teensy 4.1 and compatible with standard SPI and Quad SPI (QSPI) interfaces.

NAND vs NOR Flash — Which to Choose?
- NOR Flash (W25Q series): Random byte-addressable reads, execute-in-place (XIP), lower density — best for code storage and small data
- NAND Flash (W25N01GV, this): Higher density, lower cost per bit, sequential page reads — best for large data storage, file systems, audio samples, and data logging
Teensy 4.1 Memory Expansion
The W25N01GV is one of the supported external flash chips for Teensy 4.1 memory expansion. Install using the LittleFS library (by PaulStoffregen) available in the Arduino Library Manager. The chip solders to the dedicated flash pads on the underside of the Teensy 4.1 board. After installation, LittleFS presents the flash as a standard file system accessible via the SD-compatible API.
Typical Applications
- Teensy 4.1 external flash memory expansion (128MB file system)
- Audio sample and wavetable storage for synthesizers and audio projects
- Data logger storage for sensor arrays and IoT devices
- Embedded file system (LittleFS, SPIFFS) for ESP32 and STM32 projects
- Firmware update storage for OTA-capable embedded systems
- Large lookup table and asset storage for display projects
