NEO-6M / NEO-7M / NEO-8M GPS Module

A high-performance u-blox NEO series GPS module with a large ceramic patch antenna and onboard EEPROM for configuration storage. Outputs standard NMEA sentences via UART at 9600 baud, compatible with Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi, and flight controllers. The large antenna provides superior signal acquisition in challenging environments. Operating range: -40°C to +80°C.

Why Choose NEO Series GPS Module?

  • Large ceramic patch antenna — superior signal acquisition vs small chip antenna modules
  • Onboard EEPROM — saves configuration (baud rate, update rate) across power cycles
  • NMEA output — standard sentences (GGA, RMC, VTG) compatible with all GPS libraries
  • 3.3V–5V supply — direct connection to Arduino (5V) or ESP32 (3.3V)
  • Multi-GNSS (NEO-7M/8M) — faster fix and better accuracy with GLONASS/BeiDou

Compatible With / Works With

  • Arduino UNO/Nano/Mega (SoftwareSerial or Serial1/2)
  • ESP32 / ESP8266 (hardware UART, 3.3V compatible)
  • Raspberry Pi (UART via GPIO14/15)
  • APM / Pixhawk flight controller (GPS port, NMEA or u-blox binary)
  • Libraries: TinyGPS++, NeoGPS, u-blox UBX protocol

Typical Applications

  • Drone GPS — position hold, return-to-home, and waypoint navigation for APM/Pixhawk
  • GPS Tracker — Arduino + SIM800L + NEO-6M for vehicle or asset tracking
  • Weather Station — GPS time synchronization for data logging
  • Autonomous Robot — outdoor GPS navigation with Arduino or Raspberry Pi
  • Time Server — GPS PPS signal for NTP time synchronization

FAQ

Q: How long does it take to get a GPS fix?
A: Cold start (first use or after long power-off): 27–60 seconds outdoors with clear sky view. Hot start (powered recently, EEPROM has almanac): ~1 second. Ensure the antenna faces the open sky for fastest acquisition.

Q: Can NEO-6M work indoors?
A: GPS signals are very weak indoors. The large ceramic antenna helps, but reliable indoor fix is not guaranteed. For indoor positioning, use Wi-Fi or BLE instead.

Q: What is the difference between NEO-6M, NEO-7M, and NEO-8M?
A: NEO-6M supports GPS only. NEO-7M adds GLONASS for faster fix and better coverage. NEO-8M adds BeiDou for the best multi-constellation performance. For most Arduino projects, NEO-6M is sufficient; for drones and precision applications, NEO-8M is recommended.
