MKP (Metallized Polypropylene) film capacitors are the gold standard for audio crossover networks, speaker frequency dividers, and audiophile amplifier coupling applications. Unlike electrolytic capacitors, MKP capacitors are non-polarized, have negligible ESR (equivalent series resistance), extremely low dielectric absorption, and virtually zero distortion — making them the preferred choice for any signal path where audio quality is paramount.

Speaker Crossover Network Design

MKP capacitors are used in passive crossover networks to route frequency bands to the appropriate drivers:

  • High-pass filter (tweeter): Capacitor in series with tweeter. Crossover frequency: f = 1 / (2π × C × R), where R = tweeter impedance (typically 8Ω). Example: 2.2µF for ~9kHz crossover with 8Ω tweeter.
  • Low-pass filter (woofer): Inductor in series with woofer (capacitor in parallel for 2nd order). Capacitor value determines rolloff slope and frequency.
  • Bandpass filter (midrange): Combination of high-pass and low-pass sections using MKP capacitors and air-core inductors.
