74HCT125 Quad Bus Buffer IC – DIP-14, TTL-Compatible, 3-State

The 74HCT125 is a quad (4-channel) non-inverting bus buffer with TTL-compatible inputs and individually controlled 3-state outputs – the TTL-input version of the 74HC125. Each of the four channels has its own independent output enable (̅O̅E̅) pin, allowing individual channel control. With TTL input thresholds (VIH = 2.0V), it's the correct choice for buffering 3.3V signals to drive 5V TTL systems, or for isolating bus segments with independent tri-state control.

Electrical Specifications

  • Part Number: 74HCT125 / SN74HCT125N / MC74HCT125AN
  • Package: DIP-14 (through-hole, 2.54mm pitch)
  • Channels: 4 (independent, non-inverting)
  • Supply Voltage: 4.5V – 5.5V (5V operation)
  • Input Thresholds: TTL (VIH = 2.0V, VIL = 0.8V)
  • Output Enable: Individual per channel (̅O̅E̅1–̅O̅E̅4, active LOW)
  • Output Drive Current: ±25mA per pin
  • Propagation Delay: ~10ns (typical at 4.5V)
  • Operating Temperature: −40°C to +125°C

74HCT125 vs 74HC125 – Input Threshold Difference

  • 74HC125: CMOS inputs (VIH = 0.7×VCC = 3.5V at 5V) – requires full CMOS swing
  • 74HCT125: TTL inputs (VIH = 2.0V) – accepts 3.3V logic signals at 5V supply
  • Use 74HCT125 when the input signal is 3.3V and the output needs to be 5V-compatible

Typical Applications

  • 3.3V → 5V level shifting: Buffer 3.3V microcontroller outputs to drive 5V TTL peripherals
  • Bus isolation: Individually tri-state 4 bus lines with independent control
  • Signal buffering: Drive multiple loads from a single signal source
  • Arduino to 5V TTL: Interface Arduino (5V) outputs with TTL-threshold devices
  • Multiplexed bus: Selectively connect/disconnect bus segments

Package Contents

  • 1 × 74HCT125 DIP-14 quad bus buffer IC

Four independently controlled TTL-compatible buffers with 3-state outputs – the 74HCT125 is the go-to IC for 3.3V↔5V level shifting and bus isolation with individual channel control.
