CBB61 Fan Start Capacitor — 1µF–4.5µF, 450V AC, Ceiling & Table Fan Motor
CBB61 series metallised polypropylene film capacitor for single-phase AC fan motor starting and running applications, rated at 450V AC and available in capacitance values from 1µF to 4.5µF. The CBB61 is the standard motor run/start capacitor for ceiling fans, table fans, exhaust fans, and other single-phase AC induction motors requiring a capacitor to create the phase shift needed for self-starting. The polypropylene film construction provides low loss, long service life, and stable capacitance over the operating temperature range.

Capacitance Selection Guide
| Fan Type | Typical Capacitance | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Small table fan (30–40W) | 1–1.5µF | Check motor nameplate for exact value |
| Standard ceiling fan (50–60W) | 2–2.5µF | Most common ceiling fan capacitance |
| Large ceiling fan (70–80W) | 3–4µF | High-torque or large-diameter fans |
| Industrial exhaust fan | 3.5–4.5µF | Verify against motor nameplate |
Typical Applications
- Ceiling Fan Repair: Replace a failed CBB61 capacitor on a ceiling fan that hums but does not start, or starts slowly and runs at reduced speed
- Table Fan Repair: Replace a failed start capacitor on a table fan or pedestal fan that fails to start or runs erratically
- Exhaust Fan: Motor run capacitor replacement for bathroom, kitchen, and industrial exhaust fans
- Single-Phase AC Motor: Run capacitor for single-phase capacitor-run induction motors in pumps, compressors, and HVAC equipment
Installation Notes
- Disconnect the fan from mains power before replacing the capacitor
- Discharge the old capacitor before handling (short the terminals through a 10kΩ resistor)
- Match the replacement capacitor value exactly to the original (check the motor nameplate or original capacitor label)
- The rated voltage of the replacement must be equal to or greater than the original (450V AC is standard for most fans)
FAQ
Q: How do I know if my fan capacitor has failed?
A: Common symptoms of a failed fan capacitor include: fan hums but does not start, fan starts only when given a manual push, fan runs at reduced speed, or fan runs hot. Test the capacitor with a capacitance meter — a failed capacitor will read significantly below its rated value or open circuit.
Q: Can I use a higher capacitance value than the original?
A: No. Using a higher capacitance than specified will cause the motor to overheat and may damage the motor windings. Always replace with the exact capacitance value specified on the motor nameplate.
