LM386 Low Voltage Audio Amplifier IC — DIP-8
The LM386 is the most popular low-voltage audio power amplifier IC for hobbyist and Arduino projects. Operating from 4V to 12V with adjustable gain from 20× to 200×, it can drive an 8Ω speaker at up to 1W output power. The DIP-8 package is breadboard compatible, making it ideal for prototyping audio amplifier circuits.
Key Specifications
- Package: DIP-8 | Supply voltage: 4–12V
- Output power: 0.25W (6V) to 1W (12V) into 8Ω
- Voltage gain: 20× (26dB) to 200× (46dB) adjustable
- Quiescent current: 4mA | Bandwidth: 300kHz
- THD: 0.2% at 125mW | Input impedance: 50kΩ
- Compliance: RoHS compliant
Why Choose This?
- ✅ Breadboard compatible DIP-8 — ideal for prototyping audio circuits
- ✅ Low voltage operation — works from 4V battery supply
- ✅ Adjustable gain — set gain with a single resistor between pins 1 and 8
- ✅ Minimal external components — functional with just a few capacitors and resistors
Typical Applications
- Arduino audio output speaker amplifier
- Battery-powered portable audio amplifier
- Intercom and walkie-talkie audio stage
- Signal amplification in audio processing circuits
