Red LED 5mm Diffused — General Purpose, 10-Pack for Arduino, Breadboard & PCB Projects
The 5mm diffused red LED is the most widely used general-purpose indicator LED in electronics. Whether you’re building your first Arduino project, prototyping a custom PCB, or adding status indicators to a finished product, the 5mm red LED is the universal starting point — instantly recognizable as the stop/error/alert indicator color in virtually every electronics application worldwide.
Red LEDs have the lowest forward voltage of all common LED colors (typically 1.8–2.2V), making them the most efficient and easiest to drive from 3.3V and 5V Arduino circuits. The diffused lens scatters light evenly across a wide viewing angle, providing omnidirectional visibility even when the LED is not viewed straight-on. Supplied in a 10-pack for prototyping and small production runs.
Key Features
- 5mm through-hole package — breadboard and PCB compatible; standard LED footprint
- Diffused lens — wide viewing angle (~120°) for omnidirectional visibility
- Red color — universal stop/error/alert/fault indicator color
- Low forward voltage ~1.8–2.2V — most efficient and easiest to drive of all common LED colors
- 10-pack — ideal for prototyping and small production runs
- Long service life — LED technology; no filament to burn out
How to Use with Arduino
- Connect the anode (longer leg) to an Arduino digital output pin through a 220–330Ω current-limiting resistor
- Connect the cathode (shorter leg) to GND
- Set the digital pin HIGH to turn the LED on, LOW to turn it off
- For PWM dimming: use
analogWrite(pin, value)with value 0–255
Typical Applications
- Error and alert indicators — red is the universal stop/error/fault indicator color
- Arduino beginner projects — the classic first Arduino LED project
- Breadboard prototyping — quick indicator for circuit testing and debugging
- Custom PCB status indicators — fault, error, and alert indicators on custom PCBs
- Robotics and automation — fault and status indicator LEDs
- Traffic light and signal projects — stop signal in traffic light Arduino projects
- Educational electronics kits — STEM and electronics learning projects
