PN2222A NPN General Purpose Transistor — TO-92, 40V / 600mA, 10 Pieces
The PN2222A is a popular NPN general-purpose transistor offering 3× the collector current of the 2N3904 (600mA vs. 200mA) in the same compact TO-92 package. It is the go-to choice when the 2N3904 is not quite powerful enough — for relay coil drivers, small motor control, multiple LED arrays, and any application requiring up to 600mA of switched current from a microcontroller GPIO. The 75V collector-base voltage also provides extra headroom for higher-voltage switching applications.
10 pieces per pack.
Key Specifications
- Type: NPN Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT), silicon
- Package: TO-92 (through-hole, plastic)
- Pinout (flat face forward, left to right): Emitter (E) — Base (B) — Collector (C)
- Collector-Emitter Voltage (Vceo): 40V
- Collector-Base Voltage (Vcbo): 75V
- Collector Current (Ic): 600mA continuous
- DC Current Gain (hFE): 100–300 (@ Ic=150mA, Vce=1V)
- Power Dissipation (Pd): 625mW
- Saturation Voltage (Vce(sat)): 0.3V @ Ic=150mA
- Manufacturer: Fairchild / ON Semiconductor
- Quantity: 10 pieces
TO-92 Pinout (Flat Face Forward)
- Pin 1 (left): Emitter (E)
- Pin 2 (center): Base (B)
- Pin 3 (right): Collector (C)
Relay Driver Circuit (12V Relay from 5V Arduino)
- Base (B) → Arduino GPIO via 1kΩ resistor
- Collector (C) → Relay coil negative terminal
- Emitter (E) → GND
- Relay coil positive → 12V supply
- 1N4007 flyback diode across relay coil (cathode to 12V, anode to Collector)
- GPIO HIGH = relay ON; GPIO LOW = relay OFF
PN2222A vs. 2N3904 vs. TIP120
- PN2222A: 40V, 600mA. Best for relay drivers, small motors, LED arrays up to 600mA.
- 2N3904: 40V, 200mA. For lighter loads (single LEDs, signal switching) up to 200mA.
- TIP120: 60V, 5A, Darlington. For high-current loads (large motors, fans) up to 5A.
Typical Applications
- 5V/12V relay coil driver from Arduino GPIO
- Small DC motor control (up to 600mA)
- Multiple LED array driver (up to 600mA total)
- Continuity tester circuit (base pulled high by probe contact)
- Buzzer and piezo driver
- Signal amplification and switching
- MOSFET gate driver (NPN transistor driving P-channel gate)
- Logic-level signal inversion and buffering
