Bourns PEL12S Rotary Encoder with Red Illuminated Shaft — 24 Detents, 12mm
The Bourns PEL12S-4224S-N1024 is a premium 12mm vertical-mount incremental rotary encoder with a red illuminated knurled shaft — designed for applications where multiple encoders are used simultaneously, such as MIDI controllers, audio mixing equipment, and Eurorack synthesizer modules. The clear knurled shaft is designed to be used without a knob so the red LED illumination is visible, creating a distinctive and functional visual indicator. 24 detents per revolution provides fine control resolution.
Electrical Specifications
- Part Number: Bourns PEL12S-4224S-N1024
- Type: Incremental rotary encoder (no absolute position)
- Detents per Revolution: 24 (24 clicks = 1 full rotation)
- Outputs: A (CLK) and B (DT) quadrature outputs
- Pushbutton: None (no shaft press function)
- Rotation: Continuous 360° (no mechanical stop)
- LED Color: Red
- LED Max Current: 25mA (recommended: 5–10mA with 220–330Ω resistor)
- LED Operating Voltage: 3V–12V (with appropriate current limiting resistor)
- Operating Voltage: 3.3V – 5V
- Base Dimensions: 12.4 × 13.2mm
- Total Height with Shaft: 24mm
- Breadboard Compatible: Yes (bend or trim mounting tabs)
Pin Configuration (5 pins total)
- LED side (2 pins): LED+ and LED− — connect with current limiting resistor (220–330Ω for 5V)
-
Encoder side (3 pins):
- A = Clock (CLK) output → MCU digital input (interrupt-capable recommended)
- C = Ground
- B = DT (Direction of Travel) output → MCU digital input
Direction Detection Logic
- Clockwise (CW): When A changes state, B ≠ A
- Counter-Clockwise (CCW): When A changes state, B = A
- Use interrupt-driven reading (pins 2 & 3 on Arduino Uno) for best performance
Typical Applications
- MIDI controllers: Multiple illuminated encoders for parameter control with visual feedback
- Audio mixing: Volume, pan, and EQ control with LED status indication
- Eurorack synthesizers: Modulation depth, frequency, and envelope control
- DJ equipment: BPM, filter, and effect parameter control
- Industrial HMI: Illuminated rotary control with active/inactive visual feedback
