IR Emitter LED 940nm — 5mm Through-Hole, 5-Pack for Arduino IR Remote & Sensing Projects

The 940nm 5mm infrared (IR) emitter LED is the fundamental IR transmitter component for custom IR remote control, obstacle detection, and optical communication circuits. Emitting at 940nm wavelength — the standard wavelength for consumer IR remote controls and IR sensors — this LED is compatible with virtually all IR receiver modules and IR sensor ICs, including the TSOP series, VS1838B, and TSOP4838.

Unlike the module version, the bare LED format gives you full control over the circuit design — choose your own current-limiting resistor, PCB footprint, and mounting orientation. The 5mm through-hole package is breadboard-compatible and fits standard PCB LED footprints. Supplied in a 5-pack for prototyping and small production runs.

Key Features

  • 940nm wavelength — standard IR wavelength; compatible with all common IR receivers and sensors
  • 5mm through-hole package — breadboard and PCB compatible; standard LED footprint
  • Invisible to the human eye — IR emission is not visible; use a smartphone camera to verify operation
  • High radiant intensity — sufficient range for IR remote control and proximity detection
  • 5-pack — ideal for prototyping and small production runs
  • IRremote library compatible — use with Arduino IRremote library for IR protocol transmission

How to Use with Arduino

  • Connect the anode (longer leg) to an Arduino digital output pin through a 100–220Ω current-limiting resistor
  • Connect the cathode (shorter leg) to GND
  • For IR remote control: use the IRremote Arduino library to pulse the LED at 38kHz carrier frequency
  • To verify operation: point a smartphone camera at the LED and look for a purple/white glow when the LED is on

Typical Applications

  • Custom IR remote control transmitters — build custom IR remote controls for TVs, ACs, and other IR-controlled devices
  • Obstacle and proximity detection — pair with IR receiver for reflective obstacle detection
  • Optical communication — pulsed IR for simple optical data transmission
  • IR tripwire systems — IR beam break detection for security and counting applications
  • Robotics and automation — IR-based proximity and line detection

Technical Specifications

  • Wavelength: 940nm (infrared)
  • Size: 5mm (T-1 3/4)
  • Forward Voltage (Vf): ~1.2–1.5V
  • Forward Current (If): 20mA (typical), 100mA (peak pulsed)
  • Package: Through-hole, 2-pin
  • Quantity: 5 per pack
  • Brand: Keszoox
  • Origin: Mainland China
