LTC1871 Adjustable DC-DC Boost Module — 3.5–30V / 10A / 100W with Built-In Voltmeter

A high-power adjustable DC-DC boost (step-up) converter module based on the Linear Technology LTC1871 controller IC, capable of stepping up any input voltage from 3.5–30V to a higher output voltage in the same range at up to 6A continuous (10A peak) and 100W maximum output power. The built-in dual-display voltmeter shows input and output voltage simultaneously, eliminating the need for a separate multimeter during setup and adjustment.

Each module is inspected, output pre-set to 12V, and load-tested at 5V in / 12V out / 5A before shipping. Shipped in an ESD-protective resealable bag.

Key Specifications

  • Controller IC: LTC1871 (Linear Technology / Analog Devices)
  • Topology: Non-isolated boost (step-up) converter
  • Input Voltage Range: 3.5V – 30V
  • Output Voltage Range: 3.5V – 30V (must be higher than input)
  • Output Current: 6A continuous / 10A peak
  • Maximum Output Power: 100W
  • Switching Frequency: 50kHz – 1MHz (measured ~500kHz)
  • Efficiency: 85–98% (varies with input/output ratio and load)
  • Output Ripple: 50–250mV (increases with load)
  • Display: Built-in red LED voltmeter (input/output, toggleable)
  • Voltage Adjustment: Multi-turn potentiometer (CW = increase, CCW = decrease)
  • Connections: Screw terminals (dual IN+/IN−, dual OUT+/OUT−)
  • Dimensions: 67 × 42 × 20mm
  • Electrical Isolation: Non-isolated (input and output GND are common)

Measured Efficiency (Selected Operating Points)

  • 5V in → 9V out @ 3A: 85% efficiency, MOSFET 75°C
  • 9V in → 12V out @ 4.35A: 92% efficiency, MOSFET 86°C
  • 12V in → 24V out @ 3A: 94% efficiency, MOSFET 85°C
  • 24V in → 30V out @ 3.8A: 98% efficiency, MOSFET 89°C

Voltmeter Display Operation

  • Single button press cycles through: Input voltage → Output voltage → Auto-switch (alternates every 3s)
  • Red LED lights when input voltage is displayed
  • Press and hold ~3s: shows current display mode ([0]=input, [1]=output, [2]=auto)
  • Hold additional ~2s: display turns off; press again to restore
  • Display accuracy: ±0.1V (note: output reading may shift slightly under heavy load)

Wiring

  • IN+: Positive input voltage (3.5–30V)
  • IN−: Input ground
  • OUT+: Positive output voltage (3.5–30V, higher than input)
  • OUT−: Output ground (common with IN−)
  • Dual terminals on each connection allow parallel wiring of multiple loads or redundant cables
  • Important: Connect input and output wiring correctly before applying power. Reverse connection may damage the module.

Thermal Notes

  • MOSFET and Schottky diode have heatsinks installed on the module
  • At 6A input / high step-up ratios, MOSFET temperature reaches 85–91°C — ensure adequate ventilation
  • For sustained high-power operation, add external airflow (small fan) to keep MOSFET below 100°C
  • Output ripple increases significantly at high load — add output capacitor (470µF–1000µF) if ripple-sensitive loads are connected

Typical Applications

  • 5V USB power bank → 12V/24V output for automotive accessories
  • 12V battery → 24V/30V for higher-voltage motors or LED drivers
  • Solar panel (low voltage) → regulated higher voltage for charging
  • Lab bench adjustable boost supply (3.5–30V output)
  • Laptop power from 12V car battery (5V–12V → 19V–20V)
  • LED driver supply voltage boost

Package Contents

  • 1 × LTC1871 adjustable DC-DC boost module (pre-tested, output set to 12V)
