  • 48V bus DC-DC converter: IRF540N (100V, 33A, good balance of voltage and current)
  • Offline flyback SMPS (230V AC input): IRF840 (500V, handles 325V DC bus with margin)
  • High-side P-channel switch (12V–48V): IRF9540N (100V, 23A, no bootstrap needed)
  • H-bridge motor driver (high-side): IRF9540N (P-Ch) + IRFZ44N or IRF3205 (N-Ch)

TO-220 Pinout (All Devices)

  • Pin 1 (left): Gate (G)
  • Pin 2 (center): Drain (D)
  • Pin 3 (right): Source (S)
  • Tab (metal): Drain (D) — use insulating pad when mounting to grounded heatsink

Gate Drive Notes

  • All N-channel devices require Vgs = 10V for full Rds(on) specification
  • IRFZ44N has Vgs(th) = 2–4V — partially enhanced at 5V, suitable for Arduino direct drive at low currents
  • IRF510N/520N/530N/540N/640N/740/840 require 10V gate drive for full performance
  • IRF9540N (P-channel) requires Vgs = −10V for full enhancement (gate must be pulled 10V below source)
  • Use gate driver ICs (IR2104, TC4420, UCC27524) for high-frequency switching or high-current applications
  • Add 10–22Ω series gate resistor to limit switching speed and reduce EMI
