CD4026 / CD4026BE — CMOS Decade Counter with 7-Segment Display Driver, DIP-16
The CD4026 (also marked CD4026BE) is a CMOS decade counter with integrated 7-segment display decoder/driver. It counts from 0 to 9 and directly drives a common-cathode 7-segment LED display without any additional decoder IC — making it the simplest way to build a digital counter display. Operating from 3V to 15V, it is compatible with both 5V TTL and 3.3V CMOS systems. Each pack contains 10 pieces.

Why Choose CD4026?
- Counter + decoder in one IC — no separate 7447 or 74HC4511 decoder needed
- Direct 7-segment drive — connect segment outputs directly to common-cathode display
- Cascadable — chain multiple CD4026 ICs for 2-digit, 3-digit, or more displays
- Wide supply range (3–15V) — works with 5V Arduino, 3.3V ESP32, and 9V/12V systems
- Clock inhibit & display enable — pause counting or blank display independently
- 10-pack value — enough for multi-digit counter projects
Typical Applications
- Digital event counter — count button presses, pulses, or sensor triggers on a 7-segment display
- Frequency divider — divide input frequency by 10 with carry-out output
- Scoreboard display — simple 1–4 digit score counter for games and sports
- Stopwatch / timer display — seconds and minutes counter with 7-segment readout
- Production counter — count manufactured parts on an assembly line
- Electronics education — teach digital counting, BCD, and 7-segment display concepts
Multi-Digit Cascading
Connect the Carry Out (CO) pin of one CD4026 to the Clock Input (CLK) of the next IC to create multi-digit counters. For a 2-digit display (0–99): use 2× CD4026 + 2× common-cathode 7-segment displays. For 4 digits (0–9999): use 4× CD4026 in cascade.
FAQ
Q: Does CD4026 work with common-anode 7-segment displays?
A: No. CD4026 drives common-cathode displays only. For common-anode displays, use CD4033 or add inverting buffers.
Q: What is the maximum clock frequency?
A: At 5V VDD, typical maximum clock frequency is ~2MHz. At 10V, it increases to ~5MHz.
Q: Can I reset the counter to zero?
A: Yes. Apply a HIGH pulse to the Reset (RST) pin to reset the counter to 0 and clear the display.
