Description

The SW-520D Ball Tilt Switch Sensor is a simple ball activated switch that closes when the leads are pointed downward.

PACKAGE INCLUDES:

  • Qty 2 – SW-520D Ball Tilt Switch Sensor

KEY FEATURES OF SW-520D BALL TILT SWITCH SENSOR:

  • Switch closes when leads are pointed down
  • Maximum current of 30mA
  • Contact rating up to 20V

This mechanical sensor incorporates a ball that rolls down and shorts the output leads together when the leads are pointed downwards plus/minus about 45 degrees.

The two leads are interchangeable and very robust.  They can be bent as needed for mounting the sensor at the desired angle.

OUR EVALUATION RESULTS:

These mechanical sensors work fairly well for sensing a change in position from horizontal to vertical.  The point in rotation at which the ball makes contact is not well controlled and there will be some amount of bouncing before the ball settles down.

The waveform shown here is a typical result when the sensor is moved from horizontal to vertical fairly quickly.  One side is tied to 5V through a resistor and the other size is tied to ground

SW-520D Tilt Sensor Waveform

When the leads are pointed down and contact has been made, vibration or bumping the sensor can cause the contact to be momentarily lost as the ball again bounces around.   This allows the sensor to be used as a basic shock sensor for some applications.  If using as a tilt sensor, this behavior may need to be taken into consideration by debouncing the output.
