How do I identify the value of a film capacitor by its markings?

Film capacitors use a 3-digit code: the first two digits are significant figures, the third is the multiplier (number of zeros) in picofarads. For example, 104 = 10 × 10,000 = 100,000pF = 100nF = 0.1µF. Voltage rating is printed separately (e.g., 250V, 630V).

Can I substitute an SMD tantalum capacitor for a through-hole electrolytic?

In many cases yes, if the capacitance, voltage rating, and ESR requirements are met. SMD tantalum capacitors have lower ESR and smaller footprint but are polarity-sensitive and can fail short-circuit under voltage spikes. Consult the circuit requirements before substituting.

What is the L7808LC and what can it replace?

The L7808LC is a fixed +8V positive linear voltage regulator in TO-220 package, rated at 1.5A output current. It is pin-compatible with the full L78xx series and can replace any L7808 variant.
