The VL6180 / VL6180X module is based on ST Microelectronics' Time-of-Flight (ToF) ranging sensor, providing absolute distance measurement from 0 to 100mm with millimeter resolution via I²C interface. Unlike IR proximity sensors that estimate distance from reflected light intensity, the VL6180X measures the actual time light takes to travel to the target and back — giving accurate, target-color-independent distance readings. An integrated ambient light sensor (ALS) is also included.
